Explain Like I'm Five | Don't Panic!

A few years ago, a client asked me in an interview: explain how an API works so your dad would understand. I couldn't - not then. But it taught me that the most effective way to communicate is to make the complex simple. Almost every concept has a way to be explained plainly; only the deeply academic ones truly resist it.

That is when I found r/explainlikeimfive - where you ask hard questions and get clear, jargon-free answers, as if explaining to a five-year-old. Post a question starting with "ELI5:" about anything in science, society, tech or life, and the community focuses on the fundamentals, kindly and without one-sided opinions.

You can use the same trick with ChatGPT, Gemini or any AI: just prefix your question with "Explain like I am five" (ELI5). Asking for a "non-tech" explanation is not always enough - "non-tech" covers many different backgrounds - so ELI5 tends to give a clearer, more intuitive answer.
